Childrens Hospital Los Angeles’ Department of Pathology is recruiting a nationally known academic clinician with strong leadership skills to lead the department of nine full-time faculty and 200 hospital staff. Home of one of the United States’ largest biorepositories ,the Department offers molecular diagnostics, genomics, cytogenetics, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and in-situ hybridization. The Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a member of the Academic Affairs Committee of CHLA and reports to the CEO regarding administrative, patient care, quality assurance and fiscal matters. In addition, the Chair is the liaison between the Pathology Department at CHLA and the appropriate laboratories and the Department of Pathology at the USC Keck School of Medicine (KSOM), reporting to the Chair of the USC KSOM Pathology Department for academic matters. Overall financial oversight includes: gross charges for CHLA and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Medical Group (CHLAMG) of $86.9M and $7.9M respectively, operating expenses of $23.2M and $2.1M respectively, and a combination of endowments and investments totaling over $12.8M.
Given the scope of responsibility for the multiple roles of this position, the Chair must lead by the power of reputation, ideas and motivation, and will serve as a role model to his/her staff. He/She should be a visionary who is interested in overseeing a department that provides a high quality of service, a person who embraces best practices. He/She must be effective at delegating many of the complex enabling functions required to lead the Department to international prominence. He/She must possess excellent communication skills and be seen as an advocate for children and for pediatric pathology.
Candidates should have strong clinical and management experience in a research-oriented hospital setting, ideally affiliated with a university medical school. He/She should have prior research experience that will allow optimal academic mentoring of department members, the development of a coherent research agenda for the department and promote appropriate collaborative research with other Departments and programs at CHLA. A medical degree (M.D.) is required. Candidates must be certified by the American Board of Pathologists. Pediatric Pathology Board certification or the equivalent is preferred. A current California Medical License, or qualification for that license, is also required.

Applications are invited for appointment to this Subspecialty Training Placement in Paediatric and Perinatal Pathology on the Specialty Training Programme in Histopathology in the London Deanery Region. The posts represent excellent training opportunities for histopathologists wishing to pursue a career in Paediatric and Perinatal Pathology. 2 posts are available which will rotate between hospitals in the region providing a paediatric / perinatal pathology service, including Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College Hospital, Royal Free Hospital, Imperial College NHS Trust, St Thomas’ Hospital, St George’s Hospital and the Royal London Hospital commencing 1st November 2009 for a period of 3 years. A National Training Number (NTN/VTN) is available if required.

Perinatal Pathology Fellowship Opportunity

Mount Sinai Hospital Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is offering a 1 to 2 year fellowship in Perinatal Pathology commencing July 1, 2010. Mount Sinai Hospital is a regional referral centre for placental and developmental pathology with 7,000 deliveries per year, 2,000 of which are high risk. The pathology material is comprised of placentas from this service as well as close to 200 perinatal autopsies per year. Trainees are exposed to a wide spectrum of congenital abnormalities including genetic, dysmorphic and metabolic disease and many cases of maternal-fetal vascular insufficiency.
Perinatal pathology is fully integrated with the Department of Medical Genetics and the hospital’s outstanding Maternal-Fetal Medicine unit. The fellow will have graduated responsibility in placental sign-out and performance of perinatal autopsies. There are excellent opportunities for both basic science and clinical research. The hospital is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto.

A vacancy for a position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology, Pontchaillou Hospital, Medical University, Rennes, France, in November 2009.
It is a full time position focused on pediatric pathology, foetal autopsy and placenta pathology. It’s possible to study other specialities, all of the pathologic specialities except breast pathology are analysed in the lab.
A part of the time is for teaching and research, especially for clinical research projects.
